This morning better tropo conditions, but I might have missed some good stuff.
Brest from France, (maybe Rennes too)
North Hessary Tor (Devon, UK)
Caradon Hill (Cornwall,UK)

My Camcorder battery went flat, but I was able to press my iPhone in to service-there will be a Vlog :)

These were on the indoor rectangular quad loop. The top part of the band had white noise QRM. Fortunately 100.0 Classic FM came through to confirm North Hessary Tor.

The broken UHF aerial on the chimney connected to the SDR-RTL, gave Ireland and Pontop Pike, not France or Cornwall. With also my ancestral local station 95.9 BBC R. Humberside.

My furthest FMDX via Es-and I didn't realize what I had received at the time! I thought for some reason it was from the East, and I was waiting at the bottom of the band for conditions to build. I also had a weak stations on 89.5 which was probably Antena 1 from the Azores. I didn't check higher up the band, nor did I make any WAV I/Q recordings (Reception was stronger on the car stereo using the indoor quad loop, than on the Noxon dongle which uses the broken UHF aerial on the roof). Fortunately when I played back my video after reading that there were conditions to the Azores at that time, I heard a jingle ID. Thanks to Jorge in Portugal who even recognised the first song, and to Andy (radioredcat) who received the station at the same time with RDS and recorded audio that matched mine.

Analysis of IQ WAV data file Es 12062013

On Wednesday 12th June 2013 I recorded some I/Q WAV data files in an SDR application.
These can be analysed later. Here is a video of a data file being played back one frequency at a time. Non RTL-SDR users might find it interesting.
Any help with unids appreciated, but please no guessing :)

Video

DX-wise, conditions have been flat here, although I suspect there'll be some SPE this evening:)

I am still finding stations in my I/Q WAV files from 12th June. Unfortunately due to a malfunction of the recording plug-in in SDR#, I lost seven I/Q WAV files which were full of stations-so be warned, when recording check the time AND the MB are both ticking over when you record in SDR#.

Sunday 9 June 2013

Phew! what a scorcher.

9th June Vlog
Started slowly late this afternoon, and got strong through the evening. My best Es yet this season, certainly in terms of RDS and stations logged. Algeria, Portugal & Spain.
Local BBC R3 got zapped by Radio Comercial from Portugal.

The recording plug-in for SDR# failed, but I hadn't realized and lost 7 I/Q WAV recordings. I probably missed many loggings.

There is some misinformation about the FC0013 tuner. Many sources give the lower frequency limit as 45-50MHz. It actually tunes down to 21MHz, although there are some image problems. The 11m CB and 10m Ham band work fine though.

A further wide FM panadaptor experiment

I have now tapped the IF after the two 10.7 MHz Ceramic filters in the Denon tuner.
RDS in SDR# is ahead of the tuner's own display.
Camera is on a tripod but wasn't level - no Oscar for Cinematography for me!
Sample rate is 192kHz. Bandwidth 136kHz.

RTL SDR in SDR# - RDS and stereo at a bandwidth of 96kHz
video here

Another demo of RDS with a 96kHz bandwidth. This time in SDR Console V2.0 replaying an SDR I/Q WAV data file from yesterday.
I can't record the full screen display of RDS console with my screen grabber, so this was filmed with a Canon FS100 camcorder. I have narrated this video.
Denon TU-260LII, CCW SDR-4+ panadaptor.

Further SDR panadaptor experiments

No sporadic-E noted yesterday at this location. I have been trying some more experiments feeding the 10.7MHz IF from a Denon TU-260LIII tuner in to a CCW SDR-4+.

SDR I/Q WAV file
Try playing this back in your favourite SDR application. you might need to reverse I and Q.
I have used a slight offset from the centre freq. The sample rate is 192kHz, file size 30.8MB.
all comments are welcome.

(Please note this is a data file and not an audio file)

Video:
Experiment: Panadaptor 10.7MHz IF wide FM CCW SDR 4+
Using my laptop's internal sound card with 24bit 192kHz setting. Most laptops including mine have a very poor sound card for SDR purposes, even though the sample rates look impressive. they tend to have high latency, high noise floor and poor channel separation.

Video here

I've ordered an inexpensive, but very good external USB sound card for further experiments,
The Behringer UCA-202. It has very low latency, low noise floor, and excellent channel separation, making it ideal for SDR use. It is also very small. The down side is that the maximum sample rate is 96kHz.
I thought it was better to try this at 23 Pounds, rather than a 100 Pound sound card!
(Reading reviews it seems that in order to better the UCA-202 you would have to spend 100 Pounds at least)

Sunday 2 June 2013

I try all day for Es, get vitually nowt, shut down, get on with panadaptor experiments.(I'll write about that tomorrow). After finishing the experiments, I use my CCW SDR-4+ au naturelle and find (eventually) big sigs on 10m. Go to DXMAPS and find mayhem,It's a case of "don't panic Captain Mainwaring!" as I gather myself. Software crashes, dongle failure, camera battery charging -I eventually get sorted and get CZE, POL and D. Even on indoor loop on the wrong side of the building! QRM too heavy other than at bottom of the band unfortunately.

Friday 31st May Denon TU-260LII tuner and sporadic-e report

I bought a tuner the other day. It's a Denon TU-260LII, which got good reviews a few years back. eg
 here
I paid about 10% of the price quoted in the review :)
I didn't buy it to listen to nor for filter modification for FMDX. I bought it for panadaptor experiments with my CCW SDR-4+.
To make sure it was fully working before opening it and invalidating my 60 day warranty, I tested it out and made this video.

The was some patchy Es last night and good Es early  this morning. Unfortunately it faded before I was fully awake!

No report from me the last few days as, well, there has been nothing to report.

A modest SPE opening today, with some carriers on R1 and R2, audio on R1 and some OIRT FM stations. I actually managed to ID some of the OIRT stuff myself. Yay me. :)
There were other stns but just music was heard. The OIRT opening was a bit start and stop.
